Carefully follow the directions below to get started:
1. Print out the parent permission letter by clicking on the link below, go over it with your parents, have a parent sign it, and return it to Mr. Hicks or Mr. Jilek.
2. The first 30 students to return a signed letter to school will be able to check out a book from the school. Everyone else is still encouraged to participate, but you will need to get your own book. Options include checking out a copy from the public library or purchasing a book for yourself. They can be purchased at Barnes and Noble, Borders, or online at Amazon.com. Other options would be to download a digital copy to a Kindle, ipad, or a Nook.
3. You will need to sign up for a wikispaces account in order to post your answers to the discussion questions. Start by clicking the "join this wiki" link at the top of the list to the left. Then you should click on the "make a new account" link and sign up for wikispaces. There is no cost to sign up for a wikispaces account. IMPORTANT: Use your actual name as your username so that we know who each participant is in the discussion posts. Then they will send you a confirmation email- click on the link in that email to confirm your registration and you are ready to go!
4. Then you can click on the "discussion" tab (with the talk bubbles and the numbers on it) at the upper right to get started answering questions. Very important: please sign your real name after each discussion post so that we know who you are and so you can get credit for your work! The rules for online discussion are the same as in the classroom at school- be respectful of other posters and their ideas, no inappropriate language or content. If a student violates these expectations you will be asked to leave the book study and be required to complete all of the regular Lewis and Clark classroom activities.
5. You are required to post an reply to each discussion question. You are also required to post a minimum of five replies to another student's posts over the course of all of the questions for the whole book. These could be additional discussion points you want to bring up or you can agree or disagree with a posted answer.
6. Vocabulary definitions to help you are on the "Vocabulary Words" page in the menu on the left.
7. Start reading the book! A suggested timeline for completing your reading is below. Good luck!
